Kids’ Bike Size Guide

Finding the right bike size for your child doesn’t have to be complicated. The best way is to focus on height, not just age. Children grow at different rates, so matching their height to a bike size ensures comfort, safety and confidence on every ride.

How bike sizing works

Bike sizes are typically determined by wheel diameter (12", 14", 16", 20", 24" etc.). As the wheel size gets larger, so does the frame. This means height is a far more reliable indicator of fit than age.

Which size fits your child? Here’s a quick guide:

12-inch bikes

Best for riders approximately 76-96cm tall (about 2’4”–3’2”). Ideal for young beginners learning balance or using training wheels.

14-inch bikes

Suits riders roughly 91-101cm tall (around 3’0”–3’4”). A good transitional size for early riders.

16-inch bikes

Fits riders around 101-122cm tall (3’2”–4’0”). Great for kids gaining confidence and ready for more independence.

18-inch bikes

Designed for riders about 106–132cm tall (3’6”–4’4”). Perfect for growing riders who are outgrowing their 16-inch but not quite ready for a 20-inch bike.

20-inch bikes

Designed for riders in the range of 122–152cm tall (4’0”–5’0”). Perfect for kids who’ve mastered the basics and are riding on their own.

24-inch bikes

Match for riders approximately 142–168cm+ tall (4’8”–5’6+). A solid fit for tweens/teens before stepping into full adult-sized bikes.

Sizing tips before you buy

Always measure your child standing without shoes, from the floor to the top of their head. Then compare that height to the chart above. Make sure the child can comfortably straddle the bike with both feet flat on the ground and reach the handlebars with ease. Remember: better fit means better control, better fun and safer rides.
