There’s nothing quite like the moment your child realises they’re riding a bike all on their own. The wind in their hair, the confidence in their eyes — it’s a rite of passage. That said, teaching them to ride doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. With the right preparation and a calm pace, you can help make it fun, safe and successful.
When to start
Every child develops at their own rate, so there’s no one “perfect age”. What matters most is readiness — when your child shows enough balance, coordination and willingness to try. For many, that happens around age 3–5.
Choosing the right bike
Start with the correct size — a bike that fits makes everything easier and more comfortable. A beginner bike might be a balance bike (no pedals) or a simple pedal bike without training wheels. Balance bikes help young riders practise steering and balance first.
Safety gear is non-negotiable. A properly fitted helmet is the first thing to put on. Start building smart safety habits early.

Balance Bikes
Balance bikes help kids learn balance and steering without pedals. They’re lightweight, easy to control, and perfect for young riders starting from 2–3 years old. Kids simply push, glide, and gain confidence before moving to a pedal bike.

Pedal Bikes
Pedal bikes are the next step once a child can balance independently. They introduce pedalling, braking, and more control. Choosing the right size makes learning smoother, safer, and a lot more fun.
Steps to ride confidently

Balance first
Before worrying about pedalling, let your child glide using their feet on a low bike or balance bike. This builds core control and steering confidence.

Pedalling & braking
Once balance is comfortable, add pedals (or switch to a pedal bike), practise pedalling and stopping smoothly. Explain how brakes work, and practise using them at low speed.

Putting it all together
Pick a flat, traffic-free area. Let your child start, turn, brake and stop with your guidance. Encourage, take breaks, and keep the mood light. The goal is confidence, not perfection.
Keep it fun
Celebrate small wins and take each step at your child’s pace. If they wobble or get frustrated, pause and return to a simpler stage. Every ride should feel like an adventure, not a lesson. After all — we ride bikes for joy.
